Focus! Focus! Focus!
Something I get a lot of questions about and, honestly, some push back on quite often is why our church only focuses on 4 specific ministry areas. With all of the questions about this I thought it would be good to spend some time unpacking the reasons behind why we are so intentional about what we do and why we do it. This is so important to us and the vision God has entrusted to us that I want to take this slow and actually spend a few weeks dissecting the reasons we believe doing fewer things is better than doing more things.
I want to start by sharing our vision, mission, purposes, strategies, and core values with you. I REALLY WANT EVERY PERSON THAT IS A PART OF CONNECTION CHURCH TO GRAB HOLD OF THESE THINGS AND RUN WITH THEM!! (Habakkuk 2:2)
The vision that God has given Connection Church is what we call 20/20-80. We believe that God has called us to reach 2000 people with the gospel of Jesus Christ by the year 2020 and have 80% of those serving and in Connect Groups. The vision is the tangible expression of what God has placed in our hearts. It is something we can sink our teeth into and move toward.
If you’ve been to Connection more than twice you should know that our mission is to Connect Unbelievers to God and Believers to Each Other. This is the overarching statement that directs what we do. It is a broad statement of how we will get to the vision of 20/20-80. At the end of the day we know that we exist to Connect Unbelievers to God and Believers to Each Other!
Next are the purposes of Connection. Honestly, I believe these should be the purposes of every church because they come directly from scripture and from the first church. These purposes are found in Acts 2:42-47:
As we look at the purposes of the church we are beginning to narrow the focus of how we are going to Connect Unbelievers to God and Believers to Each Other and ultimately how we are going to see the vision of 20/20-80 fulfilled. So when asked the question of how are we going to fulfill the vision and the mission of the church we are able to reply, “Everything we do will be driven by worship, evangelism, fellowship, discipleship, and serving!”
To narrow the focus further we go to our strategies. (These could also be viewed as the ministries of the church). We have 4 strategies at Connection and they are:
- The Sunday Morning Worship Experience
- Konnection Kids and 212 (Student Ministry)
- Connect Groups (Small Group Ministry)
So let’s run through it again…Our vision gives us the tangible, sink your teeth into it, goal to run toward. The mission gives us the broad, overarching, reason for our existence. The purpose tell us what will be done in each of our strategies (ministries) and the specific strategies are how we carry out the purposes, mission, and achievement of the vision.
The last aspect is our core values. These are the things that help shape the way we transition from purposes to strategies. Our core values (Placed within a biblical context) are:
- Invest and Invite
- Serve and encourage
In everything we do we want to invest in people and get them investing in others. We want to invite people to a relationship with Jesus through sharing the gospel or inviting them to church, Konnection Kids, 212, or a Connect Group. We want to get people serving God and others because if they don’t they will NEVER reach their God-given potential and the Body of Christ, the church, will suffer! And finally we want to ALWAYS encourage people to take their next step with Jesus!
Seem confusing? It’s really not that bad…at least if you’ve been over it a few hundred times like I have for the last 2 1/2 years! Check out this diagram below and maybe it will help!
In the mean time…Invest…Invite…Serve…Encourage!
