This week I found myself back in the book of Judges and again reading about Gideon. I love his story of courage and the trust he eventually showed in God (Amazingly, he didn’t finish well…but that’s for another time!) I was specifically struck by the account of God’s war plan given to Gideon as he was preparing to go to battle against the Midianites. (Judges 7:7-16)
In this section of scripture God gives Gideon the command to go and attack the Midianites. This is after God has taken his army down from several thousand to only 300! Now the 300 were given the great task of defeating an army of thousands! Surely they would be given the best weapons in the land if they were to accomplish such an amazing task as defeating tens of thousands of men with only 300…Right?! Wrong! Look at Judges 7:16. Gideon gave the 300 men a trumpet and an empty jar with a torch in it! Right about now is when I’m flipping out if I’m one of Gideon’s men! There is no doubt that I would have been seriously questioning his decision making! First he sent all of our people home and now he’s telling me to take out the Midianite army with a trumpet and a jar! CRAZY!! AND INEVITABLE SUICIDE…RIGHT?! Wrong again!
We know from reading this account that Gideon didn’t lead them into an overwhelming defeat but to an astounding victory! By the time the Israelites were finished routing the Midianites over “a hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen had fallen.” The greatest thing about this victory is that it was won in such a way that only God could take the credit and only God could receive the glory! Seriously!! You just don’t win 300 verses several thousand unless God intervenes!
I really want you to tune-in right here…THIS IS what God wants for your life! So many times we look at what God has put in our hands and it appears to be nothing more than a trumpet and empty jars. We look at our talents and abilities and, to be honest, we don’t see a lot! Listen to me…WE HAVE GOT TO QUIT LOOKING AT HOW SMALL OUR GIFT IS AND FOCUS ON HOW BIG OUR GOD IS! He routed an entire army with 300 trumpets and glass jars (at this point if I were preaching I would probably throw in a freakin’ or flippin’ or something because THIS PUMPS ME UP )! If He can do that with trumpets and glass jars what can He do with what you have? Why not trust Him and take your next step of faith so He can use your gift to advance His Kingdom? YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN GIFTS BY GOD FOR GOD! DON’T LET THEM GO TO WASTE! LET THEM BE USED IN SUCH A WAY THAT GOD ROUTES THE ENEMY AND ONLY HE GETS THE GLORY!
Let me ask you this…is it time to step into a Connect Group or maybe even lead a Connect Group! Are you serving? If not then step up and let God use your gifts! Who do you need to invite to church? Whose life have you been called to invest in so that they can see the love of Christ? Who has God called you to walk alongside and encourage? DON’T WASTE YOUR GOD-GIVEN OPPORTUNITY TO BE A MIRACLE IN SOMEONE ELSE’S LIFE!
Take a step to Invest..Step out and invite…Step up and serve…Step in and encourage!
